“Choose Life” Mentoring FAQ
How can I become a mentor?
First, you need to fill out our Mentorship Application Form. Then a representative from the Choose Living Foundation will call you to discuss your interest in mentoring. After that, we will do our best to match you to a person seeking a mentoring relationship. We strive to match people so that they will have successful relationships, so it may take time to complete this process.
What do you look for in a mentor?
We have no specific eligibility requirements for our mentors. We seek individuals from a wide array of backgrounds to become mentors. The most important things that a mentor must have are an open mind and heart.
How much time does it take to be a mentor?
Typically, we ask that our mentors devote 2-5 hours per month to speak with their mentee on the phone. You can also choose to correspond by email or whatever way you and your mentee feel most comfortable.
What do we talk about?
Each case is different. Typically, the mentee will have a specific concern or topic that he or she would like to discuss. One of the most important things a mentor can do is listen and provide encouragement. The Choose Living Foundation makes every effort to support its mentors. If you ever need additional support, please contact us for assistance.
Can I meet my mentee in person?
That is up to you. The Choose Living Foundation does not try to direct the mentoring relationships but allows them to take a natural course that is comfortable for both individuals.
Will I be compensated for my time?
No, this is a volunteer position. However, from time to time, we do like to recognize our mentors for their contributions in special ways.
Can I be both a mentor and a mentee?
Yes! We all need encouragement and guidance from time to time. We hope that all of our mentors have someone to help coach and encourage them, and we are happy to help them find that person.
